“With data pervading almost every aspect of modern life, the Connolly Alexander Institute for Data Science will enable Tulane students across all disciplines to understand how data shapes our environment, to think critically about data-based arguments and to use data in their studies and careers.” - Biz New Orleans

To meet this vision and mission, the Data Research Internship program at CAIDS offers undergraduates the opportunity to obtain a technical skillset with tangible experience working on data projects in the humanities and sciences. We aim to focus on projects that involve social justice.

This paid internship program supplements students’ major and minor fields of study when seeking employment or other technology internships. Interns work with Tulane faculty, graduate students, and staff on digital projects that contribute to original research, while also learning about issues within the field of data research as it relates to gender, class, and race.

The Data Research Internship program at CAIDS and Newcomb Institute aims to educate students about data literacy using equity frameworks through student programming that:

  1. Builds supportive interdisciplinary equity-minded data communities for students at Tulane University through collaboration, mentorship, and networking.
  2. Increases data literacy by making data research work (collecting, managing, analyzing, presenting) accessible and relevant for technical and non-technical majors.
  3. Examines a variety of data research theories, methods, and cases supported by equity frameworks. (e.g. queer, feminist, social justice pedagogies and epistemologies).
  4. Works collaboratively as a scrum team on a range data research projects of Tulane faculty and community partners while building a portfolio of data and essential skills.
  5. Becomes a maker of open-sourced technical and scholarly knowledge by producing data project deliverables, product reviews, project manuals, and scholarship.

Types of Projects/Skill Training: GIS/Mapping, R, Python, data visualization, digital archiving/metadata, databases/SQL, Data collection and management, web design as it supports data projects.
